TPPP Episode 106 : Christmas with a Princess

Merry Christmas from The Triple Po! Lyman was busy doing family things, so it was just me hosting, but I was lucky enough to get Amy Kuhel from The Ginger Snaps to come on! We talked about difficult it can be for be some people on the holidays, especially those disowned by their family because they are LGBTQ and/or an atheist. We also talked about the serial sexual assaulter David Silverman being caught again touching women again without their consent. Fortunately, he was fired by Atheist Alliance International for this latest transgression, although they shouldn’t have hired his creepy ass to begin with. We also just had some fun talking about various and sundry subjects. I hope everyone had a Happy Whatever The Fuck You Celebrate!

TPPP Episode 81 : Launch Pad

This week I have on Rose Marie Pink, President and Executive Director of Launch Pad Nashville, “a volunteer-based initiative striving to provide street free sleep to youth between the ages of 18-24 with a focus on being affirming and welcoming to LGBTQ youth.” We talk about the organization’s genesis, mission, challenges, and goals. Launch Pad also happens to be the organization I chose for my Facebook Birthday Fundraiser this year. I am really proud to have supported them. They need volunteers, so consider signing up. Of course, they always need money as well, so feel free to donate! I hope y’all learn something from this, because I think it’s a great organization.

TPPP Episode 14 : Election Depression

This is the second ‘special edition’ of The Podunk Polymath Podcast. The pre-ramble is very brief, and I only read a new review of the show I received on iTunes.

On the palaver, I have a roundtable discussion with three guests : Former guests Jeanne Ikerd and Matthew O’Neil, as well as Canadian David Eastmond from The Wayward Atheists Podcast. We have a wide-ranging discussion about the outcome of the presidential election, and what we can do as concerned citizens to help those marginalized groups that could potentially affected by Trump’s policies. I hope this episode helps people realize that there are people out there willing to help in any way they can, and also that it’s time to stand up and do something to make sure that fear doesn’t win. Please, y’all who are scared and worried, stay safe and know that you’re not alone.

Welcome to another action-packed episode of The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This week I kick things off with a pre-ramble about a recently read book and how it has affected my thoughts on Hillary and Trump.

On the palaver, I speak to the dynamic duo from The Biskeptical Podcast, Trav Mamone and Morgan Stringer. We talk about their podcast; what subjects they’ve covered; and the struggles of Bi individuals have being recognized as a legitimate part of the LGBT movement. Orlando

What can one say that hasn’t already been said about the Orlando Shooting at the gay nightclub Pulse in the early morning hours of June 12th, 2016? Nothing, really, and thus I am making this a short post. As a cishet White guy, I think it’s important for the voices of the LGBT Community to be heard more loudly and more clearly than any other voices. All I will say is that it’s a horrible tragedy that was fueled by religious teachings, specifically those of Islam; a toxic atmosphere of Anti-LGBT rhetoric that is rampant in our nation, due in no small part to the hate spewed by Far-right Christian Evangelical bigots; a culture that makes deadly weapons absurdly easy to obtain; and the self-hatred of a man whose religion tells him that being homosexual is a mortal sin punishable by death.

As I said, however, it is important that I shut up and let the LGBT community speak, as was so eloquently said in this article. Therefore, I am posting links to articles blogs of those in the LGBT Community. Also, I am posting links of two gofundme’s. One is for the families of the victims of the shooting, and the other is for secular services for those victims who were non-religious.

Bruce vs. Floyd, Final Round

What follows is a guest post by listener and fellow Middle Tennesseean Wraith Writer. He prefers not to use his real name because the views expressed in this piece could cause some devastating real-life repercussions, including the loss of his job. The fact that expressing views of tolerance and acceptance could result in such an outcome is a sad commentary on the state of our society, and it proves that, even though we’ve come a long way as a nation in the struggle for LGBT rights, we still have much further to go.

If you do not understand Caitlyn Jenner, it’s perfectly natural, and so is the fear you have.  It is human nature to fear what we do not understand.  Last year, many people didn’t understand that coming out of the closet was an “act of bravery”, and they ridiculed such a thing as being labeled brave. Here I see again the same people ridiculing ESPN’s choice to give Caitlyn Jenner the Arthur Ashe Courage Award as well as Caitlyn Jenner herself.

You do not have to understand Caitlyn Jenner’s sexuality or the many others in the LGBT community, but you need to understand the realization every LGBT person faces when they decide to fully disclose their nature.  They face the risk of being insulted, bullied, or  assaulted (remember gay bashing?); being ostracized by their community; disowned by their family;  fired from their job; and even being killed (12 transgender people murdered in 2014, and 9 people so far in 2015).

Yes, there are many other athletes who are very brave; who have inspired others; and who have faced death from a terminal disease. All of these people are accepted for who they are in this society and do not have to face ridicule for their nature. I have yet to hear of people being targeted for murder for being disabled, an amputee, or having a terminal disease.

These athletes did not have to deal with derogatory insults of it, thing, he/she, etc. Caitlyn is an athlete who is inspiring millions of transgendered people to be honest with themselves in the face of insults, violence, and death.  How shameful I find it that you chose to display your “courage” by attacking a female while you sit by and say nothing about award winning, wife-beating Floyd Mayweather. Your verbal remarks are a shining example of the misogyny ingrained in the religious culture of our society.
